Tiffin School Admissions Information
About Tiffin School
Tiffin School is a specialist grammar school for boys within Kingston upon Thames, where the school is located, and the surrounding boroughs.
The school has a rich heritage that dates back to 1880 whilst the noble goal of funding impoverished youths in the area can be dated back to the donations made by brewers John and Thomas Tiffin in 1638.
Since 1944, Tiffin School has been classified as a grammar school, which specialises in the performing arts and languages.
Tiffin School is a dynamic, vibrant, forward-thinking school with an emphasis on preparing youth to be well-rounded, skilled individuals capable of handling the challenges of the modern world.
There were 1,059 pupils attending the Tiffin Boy’s School in 2019; the intake for September 2021 will be 180 pupils for Year 7 entry. As recently as 2019, Tiffin School has also begun to accept girls into its Sixth Form.
100 pupils are admitted into the Sixth Form every year, from which 50 are expected to be girls, resulting in about 100 girls in total (new pupils and those that began in Year 7).
Nearly half of all pupils come from a rich plethora of different minority backgrounds, contributing to the cultural tapestry of Tiffin School.
All of these pupils have learnt English to a satisfactory level and few have learning difficulties or disabilities.
Note: due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Tiffin School remains closed from 23 March 2020 until further notice although admissions for the 2021 intake are still accepting and reviewing applications. Stay informed with the Head’s Newsletter for updates.

Online registration for Stage One tests has already opened, so get on it like a bonnet and don’t delay with your application for September 2021. Tiffin School is highly competitive, so ensure that all application documents are submitted in due time.
How to Prepare for the Exam
Stage One testing involves Maths and English in a multiple-choice format (on OMR sheets).
Unfortunately, Tiffin School provides neither past papers nor identifies the test provider, which means you’ll have to prepare your son well in advance with a reputable English/Maths tutor or an online resource during the lockdown.
Similarly, scant resources are published by Tiffin School on Stage Two testing. They have published that the test will be in written format and they will consist again of English and Maths. It is also known that previous years’ tests have included categories such as reading comprehension, a task on writing, as well as maths questions in a standard format.
Once again, ensure that your child prepares well for success by providing him with robust learning materials well in advance.
While some other grammar schools do provide some means of preparation, or at least give advice on how pupils can prepare for entrance exams, Tiffin School does not. Considering the school’s competitive admissions, with over 10 applicants for each space (over 1,800 applications), your child stands to benefit greatly from plenty of well-rounded practice and exercise in Maths and English.
Academic Results
Commensurate with its competitiveness, Tiffin School boasts impressive results for its pupils’ academic achievements. The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide ranked Tiffin School 10th in the top 100 State Secondary Schools in 2011, with the following results:
A-level %A*-B: 90.9
GCSE %A*-A: 82.8
Results for 2019 are also impressive, with 84 per cent of pupils achieving A*-B, 29 per cent of which were A*. Few secondary schools in the UK are capable of reaching such successful academic achievements.
Consequently, most pupils hold the requisite academic rigour to enable them access to world-class universities in the UK and worldwide. 80 per cent of pupils proceeded to Russell Group (typically ABB or higher is required for entry), with 20 pupils being admitted to Oxbridge.
In brief, Tiffin School provides pupils with an education that ranks amongst the top in the country and prepares them professionally, academically, and personally for a bright future in academia and a wide range of professional careers.
